SULPHUR AND ASPHALT: RENEWED INTEREST IN AN OLD SUBJECT
AT THIS TIME TECHNICAL, ECONOMIC, AND ECOLOGICAL FACTORS ALL APPEAR TO WORK IN FAVOR OF SULPHUR-ASPHALT TECHNOLOGY. POLYSULPHIDE-ASPHALT MATERIALS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED WHICH CAN BE USED IN RESURFACING AND PATCHING, PARTICULARLY ON STEEL BRIDGE DECKS. WITHIN THE LAST FEW YEARS, INTEREST HAS FOCUSED ON A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TECHNIQUE IN WHICH SULPHUR IS USED AS A SEPARATE PHYSICAL COMPONENT OF ASPHALT- AGGREGATE PAVING MATERIALS. CHEMICAL REACTION BETWEEN THE SULPHUR AND ASPHALT IS DELIBERATELY AVOIDED TO MINIMIZE H2S EVOLUTION. POTENTIAL MARKET AND PLANS FOR ROAD TRIALS ARE DISCUSSED. /AUTHOR/
