A TECHNIQUE FOR PLACING KNOWN DEFECTS IN WELDMENTS

A PROCEDURE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO SIMULATE THE TYPE OF DEFECTS NORMALLY FOUND IN WELDS. QUARTZ GLASS WAS USED TO FROM THE DEFECTS IN THE WELD. THE GLASS IS FORMED INTO A DESIRED SHAPE AND PLACED IN THE WELD JOINT. WHEN THE WELD IS COMPLETED, THE GLASS REMAINS INTACT PRODUCING A LOW DENSITY AREA THAT CAN BE USED AS AN INDICATION OF A DEFECT CONDITION. THIS DEFECT CAN BE USED AS A "STANDARD" OR CALIBRATION REFERENCE FOR NONDESTRUCTIVE EVALUATIONS OF THE CONDITIONS OF SIMILER WELDS. /AUTHOR/
