STEEL PROTECTIVE COATINGS

THE PAPER REVIEWS CURRENT PAINTING PRACTICES OF RAILROADS AND GIVES DETAILS OF SURFACE PREPARATION AND COATINGS. INFORMATION IS PROVIDED ON BLAST-CLEANED SURFACES. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE ON THE PROCEDURE TO BE FOLLOWED IN ASSEMBLING EQUIPMENT FOR A SANDBLAST OPERATION. A COMPRESSOR UNIT CABABLE OF DELIVERING 350 VFM AT 120 PDI WILL PROVIDE MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY. A MINIMUM LENGTH 1.25 - INCH I.D. HOSE MUST BE USED BETWEEN THE COMPRESSOR AND THE SANDBLAST MACHINE. THE LATTER, WHICH COULD BE A LIGHTWEIGHT, PORTABLE MACHINE, MUST CONFORM TO THE A.S.M.E. CODE REQUIREMENTS. A 600 - 1B CAPACITY MACHINE WILL PROVIDE 20 TO 30 MINUTES OF OPERATION BETWEEN FILLINGS. THE USE OF AN 1.25-INCH STATIC - DISSIPATING SANDBLAST HOSE, THE PROVISION OF REMOTE CONTROL DEADMAN VALVES, THE USE OF VENTURI-STYLE TUNGSTEN-CARBIDE LINED NOZZLES, AND THE EQUIPMENT OF THE OPERATOR WITH AN AIR-FED, HARD-HAT HELMET WITH EXPENDABLE PLASTIC LENSES AND WITH A BELT AND BREAK VALVE IS DESCRIBED. THE COST OF THIS EQUIPMENT (EXCLUDING THE COMPRESSOR, SCAFFOLDING OR LIGHTING) IS ABOUT $1800. THE ABRASIVE COMMONLY USED IS HIGH GRADE SILICA SAND (OTTAWA TYPE) PASSING THE 16-MESH SCREEN. THE USE OF BAGGED ABRASIVES IS RECOMMENDED TO CLIMINATE FIELD DRYING WASTES AND DELAYS IN HANDLING BULK MATERIALS. ADEQUATE TRAINING OF PERSONNEL IS IMPORTANT IN ACHIEVING THE DESIRED RESULTS. MATERIALS DESIGNED TO PROTECT STEEL SURFACES FROM CORROSION ARE REVIEWED. CURRENT RESEARCH RELATED TO BRIDGE PAINTING IS AIMED PRIMARILY AT HIGHWAYS. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO A PUBLICATION BY THE STEEL STRUCTURES PAINTING COUNCIL WHICH IS A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF CURRENT LITERATURE AND PRACTICES. SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR COATINGS TO BE USED IN CERTAIN ENVIRONMENTS OR ZONES ARE PRESENTED. THE IMPORTANCE OF MIL THICKNESS OF THE PAINT FILM IS STRESSED. THE BEST SYSTEM IS THAT BASED ON A ZONE SYSTEM, TAILORING THE SURFACE PREPARATION AND PAINTING TO THE PARTICULAR EXPOSURE. PRIOR INSPECTION OF THE LOCATION IS REQUIRED TO EVALUATE THE CONDITIONS AND ESTABLISH THE ACTION TO BE TAKEN.
