SURFACINGS AND COATINGS ON CONCRETE BRIDGES

THE AUTHOR PROPOSES MODIFICATIONS TO THE PROVISIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS ENTITLED "BRIDGE SURFACINGS AND COATINGS", WHICH WERE PUBLISHED IN 1967. THESE PROPOSALS ARE BASED ON PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE GAINED SINCE THE PUBLICATION OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS, AND ARE AS FOLLOWS: THE PROPERTIES REQUIRED OF ADHESIVES SHOULD BE MODIFIED, AS SHOULD THOSE OF MASTIC ASPHALT WHICH CAN BE TOO SOFT FOR MECHANICAL PLACEMENT; THE REQUIREMENTS OF COATINGS SHOULD BE REVISED SO THAT THE FORMATION OF BLISTERS IS AVOIDED. THE QUANTITIES OF BINDER IN MASTIC ASPHALT AND OTHER MIXTURES SHOULD BE MODIFIED SO THAT COMPLIANCE WITH STANDARDS IS EASIER. THE LACK OF SPECIAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR JOINT SEALANTS IS CRITICIZED, AND IT IS POINTED OUT THAT SOME OF THE NEW METHODS OF JOINT SEALING ARE SO SPECIALIZED THAT STANDARD CONSTRUCTION METHODS ARE OUT OF THE QUESTION. FINALLY THE AUTHOR ANTICIPATES THAT THE USE OF SYNTHETIC RESINS WILL BE RESTRICTED TO THE IMPREGNATION OF CONCRETE, EVEN THOUGH BRIDGE SURFACINGS MADE OF SYNTHETIC RESINS HAVE PROVED THEIR WORTH. HE ALSO FORECASTS THAT BECAUSE OF COST FACTORS, BITUMINOUS MATERIALS AND ESPECIALLY GUSSASPHALT WILL CONTINUE TO BE THE MAIN MATERIALS USED FOR BRIDGE SURFACINGS. /TRRL/
