WHILE IT IS IMPORTANT TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT TYPE OF PAINT FOR A SPECIFIC APPLICATION, THE MAIN FACTORS IN PROTECTING THE STRUCTURE WITH THE PAINT ARE SURFACE PREPARATION, FILM THICKNESS, AND APPLICATION. ALL THREE ARE DISCUSSED, THE FIRST AT LENGTH. PAINT TYPES ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. THE LIFE OF THE TWO MOST COMMONLY USED METAL COATINGS, ZINC AND ALUMINUM (CADMIUM IS ALSO USED FOR FASTENERS), IS A FUNCTION OF COATING WEIGHT AND ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS (RURAL, INDUSTRIAL, MARINE, ETC.) USE OF THESE COATINGS IN CONJUNCTION WITH PAINTS IS NOTED. THE USE OF MISCELLANEOUS COATINGS--- BITUMINOUS MATERIALS, PLASTICS, CONCRETE---IS MENTIONED. THE DESIGN OF A STRUCTURE AFFECTS THE CHOICE OF COATINGS AND THEIR PERFORMANCE; SOME EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN. IT IS NOTED THAT TIMELY AND PROPER INSPECTION OF COATINGS IS ESSENTIAL TO THEIR OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE.
