A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO COUNTERACITNG CORROSION OF BRIDGE STRUCTURES

THIS ARTICLE RECOMMENDS PROCEDURES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CORROSION CONTROL PROGRAM FOR VARIOUS BRIDGE COMPONENTS. A BRIEF EXPLANATION OF THE ELECTROCHEMICAL PROCESS OF CORROSION IS PRESENTED POINTING OUT RESULTANT STRUCTURAL FAILURES. CAUSES OF CORROSION MENTIONED WERE EXPOSURE TO SALT WATER WHERE BOTH CONCRETE AND WATER (OR SOIL) ARE IN CONTACT WITH STEEL, THE PRESENCE OF CHLORIDES IN CONCRETE WHICH LOWERS THE PH, AND THE POROSITY OF THE CONCRETE. SOME REMEDIES SUGGESTED WERE: CATHODIC PROTECTION; COATINGS, BOTH METALLIC AND DIELECTRIC AND CONCRETE JACKETS. EXCLUSION OF CHLORIDES IS ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE STEPS TO CURTAIL CORROSION. THE COST FACTOR AND THE TYPE OF STRUCTURE GOVERNS THE SELECTION OF MATERIAL AND METHOD TO BE USED. INSPECTION METHODS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED ALONG WITH GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS IN REGARD TO CONSTRUCTION, MAINTENANCE, AND PERSONNEL TRAINING.
