COMPLEX ROAD JOB: STEEL BRIDGE AIDS CASTING ON LOCH ARVE SCHEME

THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION, A REINFORCED CONCRETE BOX SECTION, A LENGTH CARRIED ON VIADUCT, AND A BRIDGE ARE BEING USED IN THE REALIGNMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE A85 TRUNK ROAD. THE COLUMNS SUPPORTING THE ROAD ARE MADE UP OF CONCRETE PIPES INSTALLED BY DIVERS. THEY ARE SET ON ROCK FOUNDATIONS, AND THE BOTTOM OF EACH PIPE IS PLUGGED WITH TREMIED CONCRETE TO GIVE A SEAL AT THE ROCK SHELF. ACROSS EACH SET OF PIPES. TRANSVERSE REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS WERE CAST INSITU; ON TOP OF THESE, SETS OF INVERTED T-BEAMS WERE PLACED LONGITUDINALLY AND COVERED WITH A REINFORCED CONCRETE DECK SLAB. THE WESTERN END OF THE VIADUCT WILL BE LINKED WITH A ROAD BUILT ON A REINFORCED CONCRETE BOX SECTION. AT THE EASTERN END, A BRIDGE WILL EXTEND OVER AN INLET OF THE LOCH WHERE COLUMNS WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPRACTICABLE. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE POST-TENSIONED CONCRETE HOLLOW BEAMS WHICH WILL CARRY THE ROAD DECK, PILED FOUNDATIONS AND ABUTMENT AND OF THE TEMPORARY STEEL SERVICE GIRDER USED FOR TESTING THE BEAMS IN-SITU. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE COMPLETE SECTION OF ROAD IMPROVEMENT WILL BE OPEN FOR TWO-WAY TRAFFIC TOWARDS THE END OF NEXT YEAR. /TRRL/
