HEATHROW AIRPORT LONDON, REPAIR AND STRENGTHENING OF THE MAIN TUNNEL ON ACCESS ROAD

THE ARTICLE DISCUSSES REPAIRS THAT WERE MADE TO THE INTERNAL FACE OF THE EASTERN SUBWAY GIVING ACCESS TO THE CENTRAL TERMINAL AREA OF HEATHROW AIRPORT. WHEN COMPLETED IN 1954, A 1/2 IN. INTERNAL LINING OF MAGNESITE HAD BEEN APPLIED, BUT IN 1964, AFTER AN INVESTIGATION INTO CRACKING AND SPALLING OF THE SUBWAY ROOF LINING, THE MAGNESITE WAS REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH A GUNITE LINING. ON FURTHER INVESTIGATION INTO CONTINUING SPALLING, IN 1968, CORROSION OF THE STEEL REINFORCEMENT WAS FOUND, DUE TO CHEMICAL REACTION WITH THE ORIGINAL MAGNESITE LINING. IT WAS DECIDED TO REMOVE BOTH THE SUBWAY LINING AND THE OLD CONTAMINATED CONCRETE TO A SAFE DEPTH AND TO STRENGTHEN THE ROOF STRUCTURE. A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF THE METHODS USED FOR THE REPAIR AND CASTING OF A CONCRETE SLAB BELOW THE EXISTING ROOF. THE SUBWAY WALLS AND ROOF WERE FINALLY COMPLETED BY THE APPLICATION OF A TEXTURED, SPRAY-APPLIED, CERAMIC FINISH. /TRRL/
