NEW METHOD OF BUILDING UNDERGROUND CANALS OF DIAMETER 700-1200 MM

A METHOD HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR BUILDING UNDERGROUND PIPELINES WHICH CONSISTS IN THE APPLICATION OF EXPLOSIVES AND STRENGTHENING OF SOIL BY MEANS OF POLYMERS. THE METHOD MAY BE USED FOR BUILDING 35-40 M LONG UNDERGROUND CANALS OF DIAMETER 800-1200 MM RUNNING AT THE DEPTH OF AT LEAST 5 M. A HORIZONTAL HOLE OF DIAMETER 200-300 MM IS DRILLED, BLAST PLACED IN IT AND THE SPACE BETWEEN THE BLAST AND THE WALLS OF THE HOLE IS FILLED WITH PLASTIC AND SAND. THE EXPLOSION COMPACTS THE SOIL, THE HOLE IS ENLARGED ABOUT 20 TIMES, AND THE PLASTIC COATS THE SURFACE OF THE HOLE WITH A THIN, STRONG LAYER. CONSTRUCTION OF A CANAL IN PACED SOIL REQUIRES NO PLASTICS. COMPARATIVE INDICES OF BUILDING 1 M OF PIPELINE OF DIAMETER 800-100, ARE TABULATED. FIELD TESTS ARE DESCRIBED IN WHICH SEVEN PIPELINES OF TOTAL LENGTH 50 M WERE BUILT IN SANDY CLAY OF BULK DENSITY 2.14 G/CU CM AND HUMIDITY 18.2 PERCENT. THE PLACING OF THE BLAST (POWERED AMMONITE) IS OUTLINED AND DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE PREPARATION AND PUMPING OF THE PLASTIC AND SAND MIXTURE. THE BEST SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF LESSENING THE THROWN-OUT- SOIL-CRATER AT THE END OF THE HOLE WAS THE "HYDROSTATIC PILE" MADE OF 52 MM RUBBER HOSE, ON END OF WHICH IS FITTED TO THE BLAST CARDBOARD TUBE, AND THE OTHER PROTRUDING AT THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. THE HOSE IS FILLED WITH THE EXPLOSIVE JUST BEFORE BLASTING. HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE WAS USUALLY 4-5 M WATER HEAD. IN THREE OF THE SEVEN EXPERIMENTAL PIPELINES, PLASTIC COATING WAS APPLIED. TABULATIONS OF THE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED.
