DIAMOND BLADES SAW JOINTS IN FIBROUS CONCRETE

BOTH TRANSVERSE AND LONGITUDINAL JOINTS (MORE THAN 2500 FT) WERE CUT WITH 65 HP CONCRETE SAWS AND 12 IN. DIAM. DIAMOND BLADES. THE 2 OPERATOR WORK FORCE WHICH WORKED A 12 HR. DAY EMPLOYED 2 SAW MACHINES AND 2 WATER TRUCKS. THE BLADES CONTAINING NATURAL DIAMOND GRIT, HAD A 0.145 IN. WIDE CUTTING EDGES AND ROTATED AT 2800 RPM. EIGHT TRANSVERSE JOINTS WERE SAWN TO A DEPTH OF 3 IN. IN A WIDTH OF 0.125 IN. AND 50 TO 100 FT. APART. NO DIFFERENCE WAS OBSERVED IN THE SAWING OF THIS NEW CONCRETE MIX AND THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF UNUSUAL OR EXCESSIVE BLADE WEAR. AFTER SAWING, THE TRANSVERSE JOINTS WERE SEALED WITH PREFORMED NEOPRENE COMPRESSION SEALS AND THE LONGITUDINAL JOINTS WITH HOT POURED RUBBER. THE TWO CAREFULLY MEASURED FIBER MIXES WERE USED. ONE HALF OF THE TEST SECTION CONTAINED 120 LB. OF STEEL FIBER PER CU. YD AND THE OTHER HALF CONTAINED 200 LB. PER CU. YD. PREVIOUS TESTS PERFORMED ON THIS FIBROUS CONCRETE ARE REVIEWED AND ITS HIGH FLEXURAL AND TENSILE STRENGTH, FATIGUE ENDURANCE, SPALL RESISTANCE AND DUCTILITY ARE NOTED.
