NEW METAL PROBE TESTS CONCRETE WORKABILITY

A RAPID EASILY PERFORMED TEST FOR CONCRETE IN THE FORMS USING A HOLLOW, CALIBRATED PROBE 13.3 IN. LONG OFFERS THE POSSIBILITY OF FIELD-TESTING CONCRETE FOR WORKABILITY AND COMPACTION. THE 12-OZ PROBE CONSISTS OF TWO PARTS, A HOLLOW METAL TUBE AND A CIRCULAR FLOATER DISK. THE APPARATUS IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. SOME OF THE FRESH CONCRETE IS RETAINED IN THE PROBE WHEN IT IS INSERTED AND REMOVED FROM THE CONCRETE. THE LEVEL OF THE CONCRETE IN THE PROBE IS READ ON THE SCALE AND THIS READING IS CALLED A PROBE READING OR WORKABILITY INDEX. THIS LEVEL IS INFLUENCED BY THE COHESIVE, ADHESIVE AND FRICTION FORCES WITHIN THE MATERIALS OF THE MIX INCLUDING WATER. THE INTER-RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THESE FORCES AND THE COMPACTION OF FINE-GRAINED MATERIALS, MAKES THE PROBE READING A GOOD INDICATOR OF THE WORKABILITY OF CONCRETE.
