THE COMPACTION CHARACTERISTICS OF BITUMINOUS CONCRETE WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO DESIGN METHODS, WITH DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

RESEARCH WAS UNDERTAKEN TO DETERMINE WHETHER A FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIP EXISTS BETWEEN COMPACTIVE EFFORT AND DEGREE OF COMPACTION. THE PARAMETER OBTAINED FROM SUCH A RELATIONSHIP WOULD BE USEFUL IN CORRELATING THE DEGREE OF COMPACTION GIVEN BY THE VARIOUS COMPACTION METHODS THAT HAVE BEEN DEVISED. THE THREE METHODS WERE: STATIC COMPRESSION (HUBBARD - FIELD METHOD), MECHANIZED IMPACT COMPACTION (MARSHALL HAMMER METHOD), MECHANICAL KNEADING (HVEEM METHOD). IT WAS FOUND THAT THE DEGREE OF COMPACTION WAS LINEARLY RELATED TO THE LOGARITHM OF COMPACTIVE EFFORT. A PARAMETER DERIVED FROM THIS FUNCTION, THE 'COMPACTIVE EFFICIENCY', IS SUGGESTED AS A BASIS FOR A RATIONAL DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR BITUMINOUS CONCRETE MIXTURES. TO DO THIS, A CURVE RELATING COMPACTIVE EFFORT TO STRAIN IS ESTABLISHED.
