FILMED BEHAVIORS AS A CRITERION FOR SAFE DRIVING. FINAL REPORT

A CRITERION MEASURE OF SAFE DRIVING IS DEVELOPED, BASED UPON OBSERVATIONS OF ON-THE-STREET BEHAVIORS. BEHAVIORAL SCORES DERIVED FROM MOTION PICTURES TAKEN FROM A FOLLOWING VEHICLE WITHOUT THE FILMED DRIVERS' KNOWLEDGE WERE COMPARED WITH OFFICIAL DRIVING RECORDS COVERING AN EIGHT- YEAR PERIOD. RESULTS FROM PERSONAL INTERVIEWS WERE ALSO COMPARED WITH THE OFFICIAL EIGHT-YEAR RECORD. SCORES DERIVED FROM THE FIVE-MINUTE SAMPLES OF OBSERVED STREET BEHAVIORS WERE USED TO PREDICT ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE OVER TWO, FOUR-YEAR PERIODS. CORRELATIONS BETWEEN ACTUAL EXPERIENCE FROM PERIOD TO PERIOD AND BETWEEN OBSERVED STREET ERRORS AND ACCIDENTS WERE ABOUT AT THE LEVEL OBTAINED IN PREVIOUS STUDIES. HOWEVER, OTHER METHODS OF PREDICTIVE GROUPING LED TO PREDICTIVE ACCURACY EXCEEDING SIXTY PERCENT SO THAT THE SCORES ARE USEFUL FOR SOME PURPOSES. IN GENERAL, RESULTS WERE INSUFFICIENTLY DEFINITIVE TO WARRANT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CHANGES IN LICENSING OR LAW ENFORCEMENT PROCEDURES OR FOR USE OF THE FILMED TECHNIQUE AS A DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE. THEY DID APPEAR TO BE POTENTIALLY USEFUL FOR TRAINING DRIVERS TO ANTICIPATE THE BEHAVIORS OF OTHER DRIVERS. /HSRI/
