THE MULTI-DISCIPLINARY ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION (MDAI) DATA BANK

ABOUT 1000 MULTIDISCIPLINARY ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION (MDAI) REPORTS HAVE BEEN MADE AVAILABLE TO THE HIGHWAY SAFETY RESEARCH INSTITUTE BY THE AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION, WHICH WITH THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION SPONSORED THIS RESEARCH THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN MEDICAL SCHOOL AND THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT LOS ANGELES. THE LARGE AMOUNT OF DATA AND REQUIREMENTS FOR GREAT FLEXIBILITY IN VARIABLE MANIPULABILITY HAVE NECESSITATED CREATION OF A COMPUTERIZED DATA BANK WHOSE RANDOM-ACCESS FILES CAN BE INTERROGATED FROM TIMESHARING TERMINALS AT THE AMA AND NHTSA. THE ORGANIZATION, OPERATION, BIASES, AND LIMITATIONS OF THE SYSTEM ARE DESCRIBED. OVER 500 VARIABLES ARE USED TO DESCRIBE EACH ACCIDENT CASE. TYPICAL VARIABLES ARE SORTED OUT IN THREE TABLES THAT RELATE PERCENT OF TOTAL CASE VEHICLES FOR COLLISION DESCRIPTION, VEHICLE DESCRIPTION, AND OCCUPANTS. VARIABLES LISTED UNDER COLLISION DESCRIPTION ARE LOCALITY, ROAD SURFACE, ROAD SURFACE COVERING (DRY, SNOW, ETC.), TIME OF DAY, ACCIDENT CONFIGURATION, AND NUMBER OF VEHICLES; UNDER VEHICLE DESCRIPTION, MODEL YEAR, BODY STYLE, ENGINE, PERFORMANCE, AND NUMBER OF OCCUPANTS; UNDER OCCUPANTS, LAP BELT, UPPER TORSO RESTRAINT, DEGREE OF EJECTION, AREAS OF EJECTION, AND OVERALL SEVERITY OF INJURIES.
