GLARE AND DRIVER VISION

HOOD GLARE RESULTED IN THE HIGHEST READINGS, ALTHOUGH ONLY 13% OF ALL GLARE OCCURRED HERE. WINDSHIELD WIPERS OR SOME PART OF THE WIPER ASSEMBLY GLARE WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR 41% OF ALL IDENTIFIABLE GLARE. THE HIGHEST VALUES OF GLARE FROM WIPER ASSEMBLIES WERE CONSIDERABLE LOWER THAN THE HIGHEST VALUES OF SUN REFLECTION ON THE HOOD. METAL TRIM FALLING WITHIN THE DRIVER'S FIELD OF VIEW COMPRISED 30% OF ALL GLARES OBSERVED. THE HIGHEST GLARE RECORDED IN THIS CATEGORY WAS HIGHER THAN THAT OF THE WIPER ASSEMBLIES. THE DASHBOARD OR INSTRUMENT PANEL ACCOUNTED FOR 16% OF RECORDED GLARE. ON THE PANEL SURFACE ITSELF, WHILE THE VALUES OF MAXIMUM LUMINANCE WERE NOT HIGH WHEN COMPARED WITH THE OTHER CATEGORIES, THE RATHER LARGE AREAS SOMETIMES INVOLVED MADE THE OVERALL EFFECT MILDLY UNPLEASANT. THERE WAS A TENDENCY FOR THE OLDER SUBJECT TO PERFORM MORE POORLY. CONCLUSIONS OF LABORATORY RESEARCH CORROBORATED THOSE FROM THE FIELD RESEARCH. /HSL/
