LASER DEVICE DETECTS OBJECTS IN DRIVER'S REAR BLIND SPOT
A REAR OBSTACLE DETECTOR AND WARNING UNIT HAS BEEN DEVISED TO DETECT OBJECTS IN THE BLIND SPOT UP TO 10 FT DIRECTLY BEHIND A VEHICLE AND WARN THE DRIVER IF THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT HE MIGHT BACK OVER IT. THE SYSTEM CONSISTS OF AN OPTICAL SYSTEM COMBINED WITH A SEMI-CONDUCTOR INFRARED LASER AND A SEMI-CONDUCTOR DETECTOR MOUNTED BEHIND THE REAR AXLE. PERFORMANCE TESTS VERIFIED THAT THE SYSTEM HAS THE NECESSARY SHARPLY DEFINED FIELD OF VIEW. THEY ALSO SHOWED THAT IT IS NOT YET FEASIBLE FOR ACTUAL USE BECAUSE OF THE POWER AND TEMPERATURE LIMITATIONS OF PRESENT-DAY LASER DEVICES. /HSL/
