INJURIES IN UNDERRIDE-OVERRIDE COLLISIONS-A CLINICAL STUDY

AUTOMOBILES DAMAGED IN COLLISIONS IN WHICH THE MAIN VEHICLE STRUCTURE HAS BEEN UNDERRIDDEN OR OVERRIDDEN WERE STUDIED, AS WELL AS INJURIES TO THEIR OCCUPANTS. PARAMETERS THAT AFFECT INJURIES ARE LISTED AND DISCUSSED. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR MODIFICATIONS OF PASSENGER CARS, TRUCKS, TRAILERS, AND HIGHWAY FURNITURE TO MITIGATE THE SEVERITY OF INJURY IN UNDERRIDE-OVERRIDE COLLISIONS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE HEAD IS MOST SEVERELY INJURED IN SUCH COLLISIONS; THAT ROOFS ARE NOT STRONG ENOUGH; THAT TRUCKS CAUSE MASSIVE DEFORMATION OF VEHICLES THEY OVERRIDE; THAT RESTRAINT SYSTEMS ARE OF LITTLE VALUE IN SUCH COLLISIONS; THAT AUTOS CAN UNDERRIDE CERTAIN ROADSIDE FURNITURE; THAT SIDE IMPACT STRUCTURES SHOULD BE USED TO MINIMIZE OCCUPANT COMPARTMENT INTRUSION. OCCUPANT KINEMATICS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. /HSL/
