IMPACT TESTING OF LIGHTING POLES AND SIGN SUPPORTS, 1967- 1968

THE PRIMARY AIM OF THIS PROJECT WAS AN EVALUATION OF EXISTING TYPES OF HIGHWAY LIGHTING POLES AND SIGN SUPPORTS, AND THE BENEFITS OF NEW DEVICES IN RELATION TO THE HAZARDS THEY PRESENT TO MODERN HIGH SPEED TRAFFIC WHEN OUT-OF- CONTROL VEHICLES LEAVE THE TRAVELLED PORTION OF THE HIGHWAY. THE VEHICLES USED IN THE TESTS WERE REDUNDANT STATION WAGONS, WEIGHING APPROXIMATELY 4,000 LB. THE STRUCTURES TESTED INCLUDED CONCRETE POLES, STEEL AND ALUMINUM BREAKAWAY POLES (BASE MOUNTED), DIRECTLY BURIED POLES AND SIGN SUPPORTS FOR DUAL CANTILEVERED SIGNS; REFERENCE IS MADE TO TESTS PERFORMED ELSEWHERE ON WOODEN SIGNS AND SUPPORTS. PHOTOGRAPHS OF IMPACTS WERE TAKEN WITH HIGH SPEED CAMERAS, DECELERATION DATA WAS RECORDED AND OBSERVATIONS MADE AT THE TIME OF TESTING ARE REPORTED. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE GIVEN REGARDING THE USE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF SUPPORTS IN SPECIFIC LOCATIONS, AND SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE FOR THE FUTURE RESEARCH NEEDS. /AUTHOR/
