CHRONIC MEDICAL CONDITIONS AND TRAFFIC VIOLATION AND ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE OF DIABETIC DRIVERS

THREE HUNDRED AND FORTY-SIX LICENSED, KNOWN DIABETIC DRIVERS IN PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND WERE COMPARED TO AGE-MATCHED, APPARENTLY HEALTHY NON-DIABETIC LICENSED DRIVERS IN RESPECT TO ACCIDENT AND MAJOR AND MINOR CONVICTIONS FOR MOVING TRAFFIC OFFENCES DURING THE PERIOD JANUARY 1, 1963 TO JUNE 30, 1968. WHILE COMPARISON COULD NOT BE BASED ON ACTIVE MILLIONS OF MILES DRIVEN, THE SITUATION IN PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND IS SUCH THAT IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY SUBJECTS AND CONTROLS DRIVE APPROXIMATELY EQUAL MILEAGES ANNUALLY. COMPARISON IS MADE SIMPLY ON INCIDENCE OVER A FIVE AND ONE-HALF YEAR PERIOD. DIABETIC DRIVERS APPEAR TO BE INVOLVED IN 1.72 AS MANY ACCIDENTS, 2.5 AS MANY MAJOR CONVICTIONS, 1.2 AS MANY MINOR CONVICTIONS, OR 1.7 AS MANY COMBINED MAJOR AND MINOR CONVICTIONS AS ARE AGE-MATCHED CONTROLS. ACCIDENT AND MAJOR CONVICTION REPEATERS AMONG DIABETICS ARE THREE TIMES THOSE AMONG CONTROLS, BUT THE GROUPS ARE SIMILAR RE MINOR CONVICTIONS. TYPE OF DIABETIC THERAPY DOES NOT SEEM TO BEAR SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP TO INVOLVEMENT OF DIABETICS IN ANY PARTICULAR TYPE OF INCIDENT. INCIDENT OCCURRENCE COULD NOT BE SIGNIFICANTLY RELATED TO ACCEPTED CONCOMITANT DISEASE RELATED PSYCHOLOGICAL OR PHYSIOLOGICAL FACTORS. /AUTHOR/
