CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF ROAD ACCIDENTS.

THE RESULTS ARE DESCRIBED ON AN INTERDISCIPLINARY ON-THE- SPOT INVESTIGATION OF ROAD ACCIDENTS CARRIED OUT BETWEEN 1965 AND 1968. TWO SEPARATE SAMPLES OF ACCIDENTS WERE EXAMINED. THE FIRST GROUP WAS 425 URBAN COLLISIONS WHICH OCCURRED WITHIN THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM. THE SAMPLE WAS MADE AS REPRESENTATIVE AS POSSIBLE BY SAMPLING 7 DAYS PER WEEK AND 16 HOURS PER DAY ON A ROTATING CYCLE. IT WAS ARRANGED THROUGH THE INFORMATION ROOM OF THE BIRMINGHAM CITY POLICE THAT THE LOCATION OF ANY ROAD ACCIDENT GENERATING A 999 CALL WOULD BE RELAYED TO THE RESEARCH TEAM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. IN THIS MANNER IT WAS POSSIBLE FOR THE TEAM TO BE AT THE SCENE WITHIN 20 TO 30 MINUTES OF THE OCCURRENCE OF THE ACCIDENT. A RURAL INVESTIGATION WAS INITIATED IN WORCESTERSHIRE. A CARAVAN BASE WAS ESTABLISHED AT THE WEST MERCIA CONSTABULARY HEADQUARTERS, AT HINDLIP HALL, LINKED BY TELEPHONE TO THE INFORMATION ROOM. A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE NUMBERING 210 ACCIDENTS IN WORCHESTERSHIRE WERE VISITED WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF THEIR OCCURRENCE. PART II ANALYSES THE ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS OF THESE TWO SAMPLES, DRAWING CONTRASTS BETWEEN THE VARIOUS CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WHICH APPEAR IN THE SAMPLES WITH DIFFERENT INCIDENCES. PART III DESCRIBES THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VEHICLES. PART IV DISCUSSES THE ATTRIBUTES OF THE INJURED ROAD USERS. PART V IS AN ANALYSIS OF THE ROAD USERS, MAINLY CONENTRATING ON A SUBSAMPLE DRAWN FROM THE RURAL COLLISIONS. /SRIS/
