REAR LIGHTING SYSTEM CHANGEOVER STUDY

BETWEEN 10 AND 40 PERCENT OF ALL HIGHWAY ACCIDENTS ARE OF THE IN-LINE, REAR-END TYPE. INCREASING EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THAT A SIGNIFICANT FRACTION OF REAR-END COLLISIONS COULD BE AVOIDED IF INFORMATION TRANSFER BETWEEN VEHICLES WERE ENHANCED. IN ORDER TO DEVELOP A PRACTICAL PROGRAM AIMED AT THE PROBLEM OF CREATING A BETTER REAR LIGHTING SYSTEM, A MULTI-PHASED STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN. THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO EVALUATE THE COST, BENEFIT AND SCHEDULE IMPACTS ASSOCIATED WITH INTRODUCTION OF NEW REAR LIGHTING STANDARDS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES AND THE CONSEQUENTIAL CHANGEOVER PROCESS. THE FIRST REPORT PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF THE CONCEPT FORMUMLATION STUDY TO EXAMINE THE OVERALL TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF CHANGEOVER AND DEVELOP A METHODOLOGY TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF REAR LIGHTING SYSTEM CHANGES. THE SECOND REPORT SUMMARIZES THE WORK PERFORMED IN DEFINING A DETAILED CHANGEOUVER EVALUATION METHODOLOGY, DEVELOPING MATHEMATICAL MODELS TO DESCRIBE THE CHANGEOVER PROCESS, AND ESTABLISHING FEASIBILITY OF CHANGEOVER MODELING BY ACQUIRING DATA AND PERFORMING TRADEOFF STUDIES USING THE MODELS DEVELOPED. THE THIRD REPORT PRESENTS THE CHANGEOVER COMPUTER MODEL THAT WAS DEVELOPED. TO AID IN PREDICTING THE IMPACTS OF REAR LIGHTING CHANGEOVER. /AUTHOR/
