The purpose of this paper is to give an overall view of what the U.S. Coast Guard is doing in the area of intact stability criteria for merchant vessels. The paper will show the development of present criteria, some of the problems with these criteria, and the research work that is being sponsored by the Coast Guard in this field. The last section of the paper will discuss briefly a computer simulation which was developed by Mr. Bovet. Because this is a status report on current activities, we do not as yet have any startling new conclusions to present. Nevertheless, we feel that a description of the work will be of interest to many.
