Polyphosphoric Acid Binder Modification
Polyphosphoric acid (PPA) is widely used as an asphalt binder modifier in the paving industry. This paper provides information on the chemistry of PPA, a brief discussion of its history in this application, a discussion of PPA use as a stand-alone binder modifier, and of PPA use in combination with various polymers, including data on the newly developed MSCR test, storage stability, and moisture sensitivity studies. Finally, best practices, as currently recommended by PPA manufacturers, are presented. The discussion is intended to provide a broad outlook of all the areas of use and a summary of the current state-of-the-art.
