SIMULATION OF MARSHALLING AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF TIMETABLES

In order to establish a rational plan covering the carriage of goods traffic, and marshalling-yard investments, an analysis must be made of shunting operations in marshalling yards, as well as of timetables, the turn-rounds of wagons, and the interaction between them. The author has drawn up a programme covering the simulation of shunting operations in marshalling yards. Given the timetable, the turn-round of wagons, and the use made of the installations, shunting operations are simulated, and the output is shown from the use of the shunting locomotives, the extent to which the tracks are occupied, the queue of waiting wagons, marshalling details, the plan covering the formation and splitting-up of trains, transit time, the number of wagons for each destination at any given time, complete statisties and the marshalling.
