TYPE L4 LINEAR MOTOR SYSTEM WAGON BOOSTER-RETARDER

The Japanese Railways have carried cut experiments in Toyama marshalling yard, with 2 linear-motor booster-retarders manufactured by Hitachi. They consist of a triple frame, one carrying rollers which grip the wheel flanges and boost or retard the wagons, the second carrying the equipment necessary to detect the approach of a wagon, as well as to measure and control speed, and the third equipped with a double linear motor. The system is remotely-controlled, or operates automatically, depending on the programme. The above article contains a general, although complete, description of the device, as well as of its systems of control, the method of operation of the motor, the reaction rail, and their different characteristics. The equipment has been in service for a period of two years. The results have been satisfactory, and a set of 11 sidings is shortly to be equipped in this way in Shiohama Marshalling yard.
