PAINT STRIPING MACHINE

EXPERIMENTATION IS BEING MADE BY THE OREGON STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT OF A NEW, SAFER METHOD OF PLACING PAINT STRIPING ON THE HIGHWAY. THE METHOD USES A SYSTEM OF MIRRORS FOR SIGHTING ALONG THE PAINTED STRIPE AND ELIMINATES THE NEED FOR A BUGGY. THE PAINT TRUCK IS SET UP WITH TWO COMPLETE SYSTEMS TO PERMIT PAINTING FROM EITHER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THIS ELIMINATES PAINTING AGAINST TRAFFIC FOR SHOULDER STRIPING. EACH MIRROR SYSTEM CONTAINS THREE MIRRORS: (1) A MIRROR DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE CAB WHICH PERMITS THE DRIVER-OPERATOR TO VIEW TWO MIRRORS ATTACHED TO THE BUMPER, (2) THE FRONT MIRROR ON THE BUMPER CONTAINS A SIGHTING BAR WHICH IS LINED UP WITH THE EXISTING STRIPING, AND (3) THE OTHER MIRROR ON THE BUMPER PERMITS THE OPERATOR TO VIEW THE ACTUAL PAINTING OPERATION WHICH IS DONE UNDER THE TRUCK. THE OPERATOR CAN ADJUST THE SKIP BETWEEN ANY TWO CONSECUTIVE STRIPES WITH THE USE OF A SMALL CONTROL WHEEL LOCATED IN THE CENTER OF THE TRUCK BED. THE OPERATORS ARE ABLE TO MATCH THE OLD STRIPING QUITE WELL INCLUDING CURVE STRIPING. A MASTER CONTROL BOARD IS LOCATED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TRUCK BED WHERE A SECOND OPERATOR CONTROLS THE TYPE OF STRIPES BEING PAINTED AND THE BEAD APPLICATION. THE CARRIAGE CONTAINING THE PAINTING EQUIPMENT AND REFLECTING-BEAD APPLICATORS IS LOCATED NEAR THE REAR WHEELS OF THE TRUCK AND IS LOWERED HYDRAULICALLY FOR PAINTING. A TACHOMETER WHEEL IS USED TO CONTROL THE RATE OF APPLICATION AND THE CONE CHUTE. DUAL CONTROLS PERMIT THE DRIVER-OPERATOR TO STEER AND CONTROL THE SPEED FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CAB WHEN PAINTING THE SHOULDER STRIPE.
