CONCRETE OVERLAYS FOR BRIDGE DECK REPAIRS

THE FEASIBILITY OF USING A THIN OVERLAY OF CONCRETE TO REPAIR DETERIORATING CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS WAS TESTED BY PLACING 1 1/2 INCHES OF CONCRETE OVERLAY ON THE EXISTING SURFACE OF A TEST BRIDGE. LABORATORY RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE (1) THE REQUIREMENTS OF A BONDING AGENT, (2) THE EFFECT OF CYCLIC LOADING ON THE ENDURANCE OF THE BEAM, (3) THE MIX PROPORTIONS OF PORTLAND CEMENT AND OTHER MATERIALS THAT WOULD BE MOST EFFICIENT AS AN OVERLAY MATERIAL, AND (4) A METHOD OF REINFORCING THE OVERLAY, WHEN NEEDED. A CEMENT GROUT CONSISTING OF ONE PART CEMENT, 3/4 PART SAND, AND 1/2 PART WATER WAS RECOMMENDED AS THE BONDING AGENT. CYCLIC LOADING TESTS DID NOT RESULT IN BOND FAILURE OF THE CONCRETE OVERLAYS. THE FOLLOWING CONCRETE MIX WAS RECOMMENDED FOR ONE CUBIC YARD OF CONCRETE: GRAVEL, 1846 POUNDS; SAND, 1143 POUNDS; CEMENT, 664 POUNDS; WATER, 285 POUNDS; AND AIR, 6%. A 1/4 INCH WELDED WIRE MESH WAS RECOMMENDED TO REINFORCE THE CONCRETE OVERLAY, BUT WAS ELMININATED IN THE TEST OVERLAY.
