A New Payment Option
Paper tickets for commuters are gradually being replaced by contactless smart card technology, which may also play a role in both transit fare payment, tolling, and parking fee payment. The author describes the benefits to travelers using all modes of transportation, as well as benefits to transportation companies and transit agencies. Disadvantages of cards with magnetic stripes include increased maintenance and higher failure rates due to less memory availability compared to smart cards. Fraud rates are higher, as well. Improvements on the horizon will be in the form of near field communication (NFC), which will simplify how consumer devices interact with one another. An NFC-enabled mobile phone, for example, with a “transit” application could allow travelers to board any mode of transportation, transforming the phone into a “virtual ticket.”
