PAVEMENT WEAR CAUSED BY USE OF STUDDED TIRES AND CHAINS

LABORATORY TESTS AND TESTS ON SECTIONS OF ACTUAL ROADS WERE MADE IN NORWAY TO DETERMINE PAVEMENT WEAR CAUSED BY STUDDED TIRES AND CHAINS. THE TEST RIG USED A WHEEL WITH TIRE EQUIPPED WITH STUDS OR DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHAINS. THE PAVEMENTS STUDIED IN THE TEST RIG ARE BOTH LABORATORY MANUFACTURED SPECIMENS AND SPECIMENS SAWED FROM ACTUAL ROADS. THE INFLUENCE WAS STUDIED ON THE WEARING RESISTANCE OF ASPHALT CONTENT AND PENETRATION GRADE, VOID CONTENTS, AGGREGATE GRADATION, MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF MINERAL AGGREGATES AND ALSO THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT ADDITIVES. GRAPHS ARE PRESENTED WHICH SHOW THE AMOUNT OF WEAR CAUSED BY SOME DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHAINS AND STUDS. IT APPEARS THAT THE WEAR DUE TO SPIKED CHAINS IS ABOUT 7-10 TIMES THE WEAR DUE TO ORDINARY STUDS, WHILE THE WEAR DUE TO ORDINARY CHAINS AND TRUCK STUDS IS ABOUT THE SAME. HOWEVER, THE GREATER PART OF WEAR OCCURRING ON ACTUAL PAVEMENTS IS CONTRIBUTED BY THE STUDS, BECAUSE IN MOST DISTRICTS, CHAINS ARE USED ONLY UNDER SPECIAL WEATHER CONDITIONS. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE WEAR IS INCREASED CONSIDERABLEY BOTH WITH STUDS AND CHAINS WHEN AIR VOIDS INCREASE. THE RESULTS OF THE MEASUREMENTS SEEM TO INDICATE THAT A WEARING COURSE WITH OPTIMAL RESISTANCE TO STUDS SHOULD MAINTAIN A SURFACE VERY RICH IN COARSE AGGREGATES DURING ITS LIFETIME.
