CONCRETE PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE

CONCRETE PAVEMENTS NEED MAINTENANCE TO: (1) INSURE THEIR INTENDED ECONOMICAL LIVES, AND OFTEN TO EXTEND THEM, (2) PRESERVE THEIR STANDARD OF APPEARANCE, (3) CORRECT FOR DEFICIENCIES IN DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION, AND (4) PROVIDE FOR UNEXPECTED CONDITIONS OF SERVICE. PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY RECOGNIZING PAVEMENT DIFFICULTIES EARLY AND BY MAKING PROMPT REPAIRS. CARRYING OUT INSPECTIONS ENABLES RECOGNITION OF POTENTIAL DIFFICULTIES. THE NEED FOR JOINT SEALING CAN BE DETERMINED BY ROUTINE INSPECTIONS. WHEN THE OLD SEALANT HAS DETERIORATED TO THE POINT THAT IT NO LONGER PREVENTS THE ENTRY OF FOREIGN MATERIALS INTO THE JOINT, IT IS NO LONGER EFFECTIVE. IN SOME STATES THE PRACTICE OF SEALING THE JOINTS HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED ON THE THEORY THAT TRAFFIC KEEPS THE JOINTS CLEAN, BY BLOWING DEBRIS OUT OF THE JOINTS. HOWEVER, OTHER STATES FEEL THAT SEALING PREVENTS THE ENTRY OF WATER. ANOTHER SCHOOL OF ENGINEERS HOLDS THAT THE AMOUNT OF WATER WHICH ENTERS TRANSVERSE JOINTS IS INSIGNIFICANT SO THAT IT CAN BE IGNORED. NON-ROUTINE MAINTENANCE CONDITIONS DISCUSSED ARE: NON-STRUCTURAL CRACKING, STRUCTURAL CRACKING, ROUGHNESS, AND HIGH SPEED SKIDDING. TREATMENTS USED TO UPGRADE OLD AGGREGATE PAVEMENTS ARE SOIL CEMENT OR REGULATED-SET CEMENT. THESE TREATMENTS ARE DESCRIBED.
