HEAVILY-TRAFFICKED ROADS - FLEXIBLE AND RIGID CARRIAGEWAYS

THERE ARE THREE STAGES WHEN DECISIONS HAVE TO BE MADE ON THE MAINTENANCE OF HEAVILY-TRAFFICKED ROADS, THE DESIGN STAGE, THE PERIOD FOR PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE AND THE TIME WHEN CARRIAGEWAY RENEWAL IS REQUIRED. IN SPITE OF THE IMPLICATION IN THE TITLE THIS PAPER DOES NOT COMPARE THE MERITS OF FLEXIBLE AND RIGID CARRIAGEWAYS, BUT DEALS WITH THE ASPECTS OF MAINTENANCE ON HEAVILY-TRAFFICKED ROADS RELATED TO EACH TYPE OF CARRIAGEWAY. THE NEED IS STRESSED FOR ACCURATE MANAGEMENT INFORMATION ON WHICH TO BASE DECISIONS FOR CARRYING OUT VARIOUS STAGES OF MAINTENANCE. IT IS HOPED THAT THE TWO MACHINES DEVELOPED BY THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY - SCRIM AND THE TRAVELLING DEFLECTOGRAPH - WILL HELP TO PROVIDE THIS. OF THE THREE STAGES THE FIRST TWO - PRE-CONSTRUCTION AND PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE - ARE SELF-EXPLANATORY, BUT RENEWAL MAY GIVE SOME CONFUSION. THIS IS SIMPLY THE ACTION WHICH HAS TO BE TAKEN TO STRENGTHEN THE CARRIAGEWAY, EITHER BY COMPLETE RECONSTRUCTION OR BY OVERSLABBING, AFTER IT HAS FINISHED ITS INITIAL LIFE, THE LATTER BEING DEFINED BY THE AMOUNT OF CRACKING AND DEFORMATION. /RRL(A)/
