THE CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF AN EXPERIMENTAL ROAD- HEATING INSTALLATION A, 412 AT SLOUGH, BUCKS

R.R.L. LAID ELECTRICAL HEATING IN NEARSIDE LANE OF BOTH DUAL CARRIAGEWAYS ON A. 412, NORTH OF SLOUGH, BUCKS; TWO BRIDGES WITH STEEP RAMPS ALSO HEATED' 9 WATTS /SQ.FT. ON ROAD AND 12 WATTS/ SQ. FT. ON BRIDGE DECKS /TOTAL ELECTRICAL LOAD 430 KW/. ON OFF PEAK TARIFF, AVERAGE COST PER SQ. YD. P.A. WAS 21D. OVER 5 YEARS. PLACING THE RESISTIVE HEATING CABLES IN A THIN LAYER OF HAND-LAID SAND ASPHALT HELPED TO PROTECT THEM FROM DAMAGE DURING CONSTRUCTION WORKS. STONES WERE VERY LIABLE TO DAMAGE P.V.C. SHEATHING. DURING 5 YEARS SOME INSULATION FAILED AND SOME CABLES WERE RUPTURED. P.V.C. SHOULD BE AT LEAST 0.1 IN. THICK. OTHER FAILURES WERE CAUSED BY DETERIORATION OF THE SURFACING OVER CONCRETE JOINTS; THERE SHOULD BE 6 IN. BETWEEN CABLE AND JOINT. REPAIRS OVER 5 YEARS COST 16000 ENGLISH POUNDS, LARGELY BECAUSE THE INSTALLATION WAS AN EARLY EXPERIMENTAL ONE. /RRL/
