Ahmedabad Launches India's First Full BRT
Ahmedabad, India opened the country’s first full bus rapid transit (BRT) service in 2009. This article describes the system. The system is called Janmarg, which means “people’s way” and currently covers 30 km, with plans to extend an additional 60 km. The diesel buses runs on a dedicated busway with enclosed stations. Passengers buy tickets before entering system stations. Significant attention was paid to designing a suitable infrastructure that eases bus travel without disrupting other motorized traffic. In addition to the infrastructure, Ahmedabad also gave attention to management issues such as contracting, operational planning, monitoring and fare collection. A BRT management agency has been set up to introduce competitive tendering of new operational contracts and to tie the operators to performance-based contracts. The BRT system has already proven to be a success, with over 65,000 boardings per day. Over half of these passengers used to rely on private motor vehicles or autorickshaws.
