URBAN PLANNING FOR SAND AND GRAVEL NEEDS

RAPID URBANIZATION PROVIDES BOTH A NEED FOR SAND AND GRAVEL AND A THREAT TO FULL UTILIZATION OF THAT RESOURCE. IN AREAS UNDERGOING ACCELERATED DEVELOPMENT, WHERE THERE IS KEEN COMPETITION FOR LAND FOR VARIOUS USES, CITY PLANNERS HAVE ATTEMPTED TO RESERVE SAND AND GRAVEL DEPOSITS FOR EXTRACTIVE USE. THE ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE NEED FOR MAPPING OF DEPOSITS AND DETERMINING THEIR ENGINEERING PROPERTIES SO THAT OPTIMUM USE CAN BE MADE OF SAND AND GRAVEL RESOURCES AND OF THE LAND AFTER EXCAVATION. STANDARDS ARE LISTED WHICH MIGHT BE APPLIED TO SAND AND GRAVEL ZONES FOR EXTRACTION AND REHABILITATION IN ORDER TO MINIMIZE THE OPERATION'S EFFECT ON THE SURROUNDING AREA AND PERMIT SUITABLE USE OF THE LAND AFTER EXTRACTION IS COMPLETED. /AUTHOR/
