STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF AGGREGATE SIZE DISTRIBUTION

THE SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF COURSE AGGREGATES NUMBERS 6, 8, 57 AND 67 FROM THREE PRODUCTION PLANTS WAS STUDIED. STATISTICAL SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS OF THE DATA WERE CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE PRODUCTION UNIFORMITY AND SEGREGATION CHARACTERISTICS OF THESE AGGREGATES DURING PRODUCTION AND ALL PHASES OF TRANSPORTATION TO JOB SITES. THE SIZE DISTRIBUTION AND GRADATION, DIRECTLY AFFECTS THE DENSITY, DURABILITY AND STRENGTH OF THE MIXTURE. THE STUDY CONCLUDES THAT: (1) PRODUCTION UNIFORMITY INDEX, WHICH IS A MEASURE OF VARIABILITY DURING THE PRODUCTION PROCESS, VARIES AMONG DIFFERENT SIEVE SIZE AGGREGATE FRACTIONS AS WELL AS AGGREGATE TYPES, (2) STUDY OF SEGREGATION INDEX, SUGGESTS THAT AGGREGATE SEGREGATION INCREASES AS THE MATERIAL APPROACHES THE JOB SITE, (3) THERE IS AN INDICATION THAT AGGREGATE PARTICLES BREAK DOWN DURING THE HANDLING PROCESS, AND THIS RESULTS INTO AN INCREASE IN THE AVERAGE PER CENT PASSING OF INDIVIDUAL SIEVE SIZES, AND (4) THE STANDARD DEVIATION OF FINE AGGREGATE FRACTION IS RELATIVELY SMALL AND APPEARS TO REMIAN UNCHANGED DURING HANDLING PROCESSES. ENFORCEMENT IS RECOMMENDED OF QUALITY CONTROL MEASUREMENTS ON THE AGGREGATE MATERIAL AS PRODUCED AT THE PLANT.
