GRANULATION OF BLAST-FURNACE SLAG /IN FRENCH/

THE GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF GRANULATED SLAG ARE DISCUSSED (VITREOUS STRUCTURE AND HYDRAULIC POTENTIAL, FRIABILITY AND APTITUDE TO RUSHING, MOISTURE CONTENT, AND BULK SPECIFIC GRAVITY), AND VARIOUS GRANULATION PROCESSES ARE REVIEWED: DRY GRANULATION (COMPRESSED AIR IS USED TO DISPERSE THE SLAG WHICH IS THEN COOLED IN A METAL-SHEET DRUM), SEMI-WET GRANULATION (IN A GRANULATING MILL THE SLAG IS LOOSENED BY SUDDEN COOLING OF THE WATER AND THROWN AGAINST A ROTATING BODY), AND GRANULATION IN WATER (SUDDEN IMMERSION TO OBTAIN A HIGHLY VITRIFIED GRANULAR MATERIAL WITH A HIGH HYDRAULIC POTENTIAL). FACTORS INFLUENCING GRANULATION RESULTS ARE EXAMINED: THERMAL STATE AND COMPOSITION OF THE SLAG, AND SELECTION OF THE GRANULATION METHOD. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE IMPORTANCE OF CHECKING THE COMPOSITION, DEGREE OF VITRIFICATION, AND APTITUDE TO FINE CRUSHING OR COMPACTION. AMONG FLEXIBLE CRITERIA, SPECIAL MENTION IS MADE OF THE LCPC ALPHA COEFFICIENT AND DRY BULK DENSITY. /LCPC/RRL/
