PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF TYPICAL AMERICAN ROCKS

RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF AN INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF APPROXIMATELY 100 REPRESENTATIVE AMERICAN ROCKS OF VARYING CHEMICAL CONSTITUTIONS AND DIVERSIFIED GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS. THE ROCKS WERE CLASSIFIED MINERALOGICALLY ACCORDING TO THE SCHEME OF KEMP. THE RELATIVE HARDNESSES OF THE ROCKS WERE DETERMINED BY MEASURING THE HEIGHTS OF REBOUND OF A DIAMOND- POINTED TUP FROM THE POLISHED SURFACES OF THE SPECIMENS. IN THE STATISTICAL ANALYSES, SPECIAL STRUCTURAL FACTORS OF A COMPENSATING NATURE WERE DISREGARDED IN FAVOR OF DENSITY WHICH IS THE FUNDAMENTAL INDEPENDANT VARIABLE. AN ABSTRACT OF THE ORIGINAL THERMAL DATA IS PRESENTED TOGETHER WITH THE MECHANICAL DATA FOR THE PURPOSE OF MAKING ANALYTICAL INDUCTIONS AS TO THE GENERAL RESULTS FROM THE TWO TYPES OF STRAIN. CALCULATIONS SHOW THAT THE HARDNESS AND THE MODULI- OF-RUPTURE CURVES PARALLEL THE COMPRESSION CURVES EXCEPT FOR A CHANGE IN THE VERTICAL SCALE, THE HARDNESS SCALE BEING ABOUT 1/300 OF THE COMPRESSION SCALE. THE MODULUS-OF-RUPTURE SCALE VARIES FROM ABOUT 1/4 TO 1/6 OF THE COMPRESSION SCALE FOR MICROSCOPIC ROCKS GENERALLY, THE LOWER VALUES BEING THE MORE CONSERVATIVE AND THE HIGHER BEING POSSIBLE OF ATTAINMENT BY PRECISE TESTING. IF THE DENSITY IS TAKEN AS THE VARIABLE INSTEAD OF THE BULK VOLUME, ABSORPTION, POROSITY, ETC., THE CURVE IS LINEAR TO THE FIRST APPROXIMATION, AND IS PROPORTIONAL TO A POWER OF THE DENSITY FOR THE SECOND APPROXIMATION. THE VARIOUS PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SYSTEM CALCIUM OXIDE- ALUMINUM OXIDE-SILICON OXIDE WERE PLOTTED IN TERMS OF THE PRINCIPLE VARIABLES OF STATE SUCH AS THE PRESSURE, VOLUME, TEMPERATURE, DENSITY, ETC., AS IN THERMODYNAMICS AND PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY. IN THE ANALYSES THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH IS INTERPRETED AS MAXIMUM PRESSURE, THE EXPANSION OR COMPRESSION AS A CHANGE IN VOLUME, THE TEMPERATURE AS THERMAL-DENSITY, DENSITY PROPER AS MECHANICAL DENSITY, ETC.
