STABILIZATION OF POOR QUALITY AGGREGATES. FINAL REPORT

AN EVALUATION WAS MADE OF THE RESULTS OF TREATING A TYPICAL POOR QUALITY AGGREGATE WITH THE FOLLOWING ADDITIVES: PORTLAND CEMENT, ASPHALT EMULSION AND HYDRATED LIME. TEST SECTIONS INCLUDED SEVEN WITH SOIL-CEMENT OR CEMENT MODIFIED BASE, THREE WITH CEMENT MODIFIED BASE USING A DELAYED COMPACTION PROCEDURE, TWO WITH LIME TREATED BASE AND SEVEN WITH ASPHALT EMULSION TREATED BASE. INCLUDED AS CONTROL SECTIONS WERE TWO SECTIONS WITH UNTREATED AGGREGATE BASE, ONE WITH FOUR INCHES OF CLASS 5 BASE AND ONE WITH SIX INCHES OF CLASS 4 SUBBASE. THE SECTIONS CONSTRUCTED WITH CEMENT AS AN ADDITIVE, EXCLUDING THOSE CONSTRUCTED USING DELAYED COMPACTION, PERFORMED THE BEST. BENEFICIAL EFFECTS RESULTED FROM THE USE OF EVEN A RELATIVELY SMALL AMOUNT OF CEMENT-TWO TO FOUR PERCENT-DEPENDING ON THE BASE THICKNESS. THE SECTION WITH TEN INCHES OF THREE PERCENT LIME ALSO PERFORMED EXTREMELY WELL. FAILURES DEVELOPED QUITE RAPIDLY IN THE SIX INCH SECTIONS CONTAINING 2.39 PERCENT CEMENT AND 2.58 PERCENT LIME. THE SS-1 TREATED BASE SECTIONS AND THE CEMENT MODIFIED DELAYED COMPACTION SECTIONS DEVELOPED FAILURES SIMILAR TO THOSE OF THE CONTROL SECTIONS. /AUTHOR/
