PROBLEMS IN SAMPLING GRAVEL AGGREGATE

THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE 49TH ANNUAL CONVENTION OF THE NATIONAL SAND AND GRAVEL ASSOCIATION, JANUARY 1965. AGGREGATE IS ACCEPTED FOR USE IN CONCRETE ON THE BASIS OF SAMPLING INSPECTION. THIS PAPER IS CONCERNED WITH SAMPLING RELIABILITY IN THE INSPECTION OF GRAVEL AGGREGATE FOR DELETERIOUS CONTENT. THEORETICAL PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS ARE BRIEFLY DISCUSSED AS A BASIS FOR SAMPLING TO SOME NUMBER OF EQUALLY ALIKE ITEMS. FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS ARE PRESENTED FOR OCCURENCES OF DELETERIOUS PARTICLES BY NUMBERS AND WEIGHTS IN 100 SAMPLES OF AGGREGATE, AND THE GOODNESS OF FIT OF THE NORMAL CURVE IS ASSESSED. THE TOTAL VARIANCE IN SAMPLING GRAVEL AGGREGATE MAY BE PARTITIONED INTO THAT DUE TO VARIATIONS INHERENT IN THE GRAVEL POPULATION, THAT DUE TO THE SAMPLING METHOD, AND THAT DUE TO PICKING. DIFFERENCES IN SIZE, WEIGHT, AND SHAPE OF THE GRAVEL PARTICLES ARE ANALYSED AS SOURCES OF VARIATION DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE POPULATION SAMPLING SEQUENCE, SIZE OF SAMPLE, AND VOLUME REDUCTION ARE PRESENTED. THE ELEMENT OF HUMAN JUDGMENT IN PICKING IS DISCUSSED, AND THE RESULTS OF A STUDY IN WHICH THE SAME SAMPLE WAS PICKED BY DIFFERENT INSPECTORS ARE PRESENTED. SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE TO IMPROVE SAMPLING RELIABILITY. SOME ASPECTS OF THE PRODUCERS RISK IN THE PRODUCTION OF GRAVEL AGGREGATE ARE BRIEFLY DISCUSSED. /RRL/A/.
