WASHING, CLASSIFICATION AND STORAGE OF GRAVEL

THE PRINCIPLES GOVERNING AN INSTALLATION FOR THE PREPARATION OF AGGREGATES ARE ANALYZED. A FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT IS THE GRADING OF THE MATERIAL SO THAT THE SIZE REMAINS UNIFORM AS THE AGGREGATE IS MEASURED OUT. THESE LARGE INSTALLATIONS USE A MECHANICAL CLASSIFICATION WHICH ALLOWS A PARTICLE TO PASS AT A GIVEN SPEED AND IN A GIVEN DIRECTION, THROUGH A HOLE WITHOUT IMPINGING UPON THE SIDES. DUE TO THE LARGE NUMBER OF VARIABLES IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO APPLY STANDARD COEFFICIENTS, AND IT IS NECESSARY, IN EACH CASE, TO ANALYZE ACCORDING TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AGGREGATE. A BETTER CONTROL OF THIS OPERATION IS PERMITTED BY DETERMINING THE PERFECTION OF THE GRADER OR SIEVE IN RESPECT MESH SIZE, CAPACITY, DAMPNESS, SIEVING SURFACE. ETC. VARIOUS TYPES OF SCREEN AT PRESENT ON THE MARKET (TRAMMELS, VIBRATING SCREENS ETC.) ARE ANALYZED. A COMPLEMENTARY OPERATION TO THE FOREGOING IS THE WASHING OF THE AGGREGATE AND THE ELIMINATION OF FOREIGN MATTER. THIS PROCESS VARIES ACCORDING TO THE MACHINERY EMPLOYED AND THE TYPE OF GRAVEL. THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF VARIOUS WASHING PROCESSES ARE DISCUSSED. STORAGE AND TRANSPORT METHODS ARE DESCRIBED. /LCPC/RRL/
