METHODS FOR AGGREGATE EVALUATION

TWENTY GRAVEL AGGREGATES WERE SORTED INTO 60 LITHOLOGICAL FRACTIONS FOR LABORATORY TESTING. THESE TESTS SHOWED THAT MANY OF THE GRAVELS USED AS CONCRETE AGGREGATES IN THE NORTHERN AND WESTERN PARTS OF THE STATE ARE HIGHLY FROST SENSITIVE. THIS AGREES WITH THE FIELD PERFORMANCE OF MANY OF THE CONCRETES MADE WITH THESE AGGREGATES. THE LABORATORY WORK SHOWED THAT THE SULFATE SOUNDNESS TESTS CORRELATE POORLY WITH THE "POWERS" TEST AND THE REPORT RECOMMENDS THAT THE SULFATE TESTS BE DISCONTINUED IN FAVOR OF A RAPID SCREENING TEST COMBINED WITH THE POWERS TEST. THE SCREENING TEST CONSISTS OF A PLOT OF VACUUM SATURATED ABSORPTION VS. BULK SSD SPECIFIC GRAVITY. THE AUTHORS ALSO STATE THAT MORE THAN ONE MECHANISM IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF CONCRETE BY FROST ACTION. THIS SUBSTANTIATES THEIR EARLIER WORK WHICH STATES THAT SOME OF THE DAMAGE IS CAUSED BY "ORDERED WATER" RATHER THAN BY FREEZING WATER. /BPR/
