INVESTIGATION OF TECHNIQUES FOR BUTT SPLICING REBARS

THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO GATHER INFORMATION ON THE TENSILE LOAD PERFORMANCE OF STEEL REINFORCING BAR BUTT-SPLICING TECHNIQUES FOR A RANGE OF BAR SIZES AND STEEL TYPES. THE AMERICAN CONCRETE INSTITUTE CODE (318-71) REQUIRES SPLICES TO DEVELOP AT LEAST 125 PERCENT OF THE SPECIFIED YIELD STRENGTH OF THE REINFORCING STEEL. THE PERFORMANCES OF SPLICED AND UNSPLICED REBARS OF THE SAME SIZE AND STEEL TYPE WERE COMPARED FOR ASTM: A15, A16, A160, A408, A432, AND A431. THE SPLICING TECHNIQUES WERE COMPARED WITH EACH OTHER FOR MATERIAL AND LABOR COSTS, THE EFFECT OF WORKMANSHIP ON THE TENSILE LOAD PERFORMANCE, AND RESISTANCE TO CORROSION. THE PARAMETERS USED TO EVALUATE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SPLICES WERE: (1) TENSILE LOAD RESPONSE, (2) FABRICATION TIME, (3) REQUIRED SKILLS, (4) TOTAL SPLICE COST-INCLUDING LABOR AND ANY REQUIRED SPECIAL TOOLS, AND (5) ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY--ABILITY TO FORM ELECTRICAL GROUND PATHS WITH MINIMUM INTERNAL RESISTANCE AND SUBSEQUENT CORROSION. THESE PARAMETERS WERE EVALUATED BY FABRICATING SPLICES FOR EACH TECHNIQUE IN A RANGE OF STEEL TYPES AND BAR SIZES. COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE MATERIALS WERE USED, AND MANUFACTURERS' DIRECTIONS WERE FOLLOWED IN MAKING THE SPLICES. ALL SPLICED AND UNSPLICED SPECIMENS WERE TESTED IN A TENSILE LOAD MACHINE. /AUTHOR/
