PAINT SYSTEMS FOR ZINC

THE OBJECTIVE IS TO OBTAIN THE PROTECTION OF STEEL AGAINST CORROSION BY FIRST COATING WITH ZINC, EITHER BY GALVANIZING OR BY SPRAYING, FOLLOWED BY PAINTING. A SPRAYED ZINC COATING CAN GIVE EXCELLENT PROTECTION TO STRUCTURAL STEELWORK. HOWEVER, THE ROUGHNESS OF ZINC COATINGS VARIES ACCORDING TO THE SPRAYING CONDITIONS, NAMELY WHETHER A SPREADER NOZZLE IS USED OR NOT AND HOW MUCH WEAR THE NOZZLE OF THE SPRAY PISTOL SHOWS. CHLORINATED RUBBER FINISHING PAINTS HAD A BETTER PERFORMANCE RECORD THAN THOSE WITH OLEORESINOUS FINISHING PAINTS. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE TYPE OF FINISHING PAINT USED HAS A MORE IMMEDIATE EFFECT ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SYSTEM AS A WHOLE THAN THE TYPE OF PRIMER USED. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE PROTECTION OF SPRAYED ZINC IS BEST ACHIEVED BY TOP COAT SYSTEMS THAT WILL NOT REACT WITH THE ZINC AND ARE INTRINSICALLY DURABLE. ALSO, RESULTS ARE STATED FOR TESTS CONDUCTED IN THE ATMOSPHERE AND IN HALF-TIDE IMMERSION TRIALS.
