POTENTIAL OF NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS OF HIGHWAY MATERIALS, FINAL REPORT

WORK CONDUCTED UNDER WEST VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS (DOH) RESEARCH PROJECT NO. 28 DURING THE PERIOD JANUARY 4, 1968 TO AUGUST 31, 1969 IS SUMMARIZED. THE FEASIBILITY OF USING NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS TO REPLACE OR SUPPLEMENT QUALITY CONTROL HIGHWAY MATERIALS TEST PROCEDURES CURRENTLY EMPLOYED IN DOH MATERIALS TESTING LABORATORIES IS EVALUATED. STUDIES CONCERNING THE POSSIBILITIES OF USING X-RAY SPECTOROSCOPY AND ATOMIC ABSORPTION TECHNIQUES AS ALTERNATIVE TESTING METHODS HAVE ALSO BEEN MADE. THE CONCLUSION REACHED IS THAT UTILIZATION OF ATOMIC ABSORPTION EQUIPMENT REPRESENTS THE MOST ECONOMIC AND TECHNICALLY FEASIBLE TESTING SYSTEM WHICH THE DOH COULD EMPLOY AT THE PRESENT TIME. /AUTHOR/
