FATIGUE TESTS OF ELECTROSLAG WELDED JOINTS
THE LITERATURE IS SURVEYED ON THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF ELECTROSLAG WELDED JOINTS, AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK CARRIED OUT AT THE WELDING INSTITUTE IS DESCRIBED. IN GENERAL, THE CONCLUSIONS ARE THAT IF ELECTROSLAG WELDS ARE MACHINED FLUSH THEIR FATIGUE STRENGTH IS HIGH, OFTEN AS HIGH OR HIGHER THAN THE PARENT MATERIAL. MANY OF THE TESTS REPORTED IN THE LITERATURE HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT UNDER BENDING LOADING SO THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO GET A HIGHER STRENGTH IN THE WELD, AT THE CENTER OF THE SPECIMEN, THAN IN THE PARENT MATERIAL. IN THE CASE OF THE UNMACHINED WELDS, HIGH STRENGTHS ARE ALSO OBTAINED, PROVIDED THAT CARE IS TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT THE WELD PROFILE IS GOOD BY THE USE OF WELL DESIGNED AND CLOSELY FITTING SHOES.
