BOLTING GALVANIZED STRUCTURALS

A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO DEVELOP DESIGN CRITERIA FOR JOINING OF GALVANIZED STRUCTURALS. STUDY WAS MADE OF THE BEHAVIOR OF GALVANIZED STEEL IN BOLTED CONNECTIONS AND ON THE GALVANIZED HIGH-STRENGTH BOLTS USED FOR JOINT CONNECTIONS, BOTH UNDER STATIC AND DYNAMIC LOADINGS. NUMEROUS PRE-ASSEMBLY SURFACE TREATMENTS BOTH MECHANICAL AND CHEMICAL WERE INVESTIGATED FOR THEIR ABILITY TO INCREASE THE FRICTIONAL RESISTANCE OF A GALVANIZED SURFACE. STATIC AND DYNAMIC TESTS WERE CONDUCTED INCORPORATING THE ADDITIONAL TREATMENTS WHICH SHOWED IMPROVED CONNECTION BEHAVIOR: SAND BLASTING, AND WIRE BRUSHING. LUBRICANTS WERE EVALUATED TO PROVIDE SATISFACTORY FASTENER PERFORMANCE. BEESWAX WAS FOUND TO EXHIBIT FAVORABLE PROPERTIES FOR PROPER BOLT INSTALLATION. THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA FOR LUBRICANT SELECTION WAS ADOPTED: (1) EASE OF APPLICATION, (2) COATING THICKNESS, (3) APPEARANCE AND HANDLING OF GALVANIZED PART, (4) TENACITY, (5) REACTION WITH ZINC COATING OR STEEL, AND (6) COMMERCIAL AVAILABILITY.
