HOLOGRAPHY AND ITS APPLICATIONS

THE BASIC MATHEMATICAL THEORY OF HOLOGRAPHY IS OUTLINED AND A NUMBER OF ITS CURRENTLY SUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONS DISCUSSED WHICH INCLUDE PATTERN RECOGNITION, STRESS ANALYSIS, COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY, AND THREE-DIMENSIONAL MICROSCOPY. HOLOGRAPHY IS A METHOD OF PHOTOGRAPHY BY COHERENT LIGHT IN WHICH A LIGHT WAVE ISSUING FROM AN OBJECT IS FROZEN INTO A PHOTOGRAPHIC EMULSION BY MEANS OF A SECOND BEAM OF COHERENT LIGHT, AND AFTERWARDS REVIVED AS A SECOND BEAM ALONE. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LASER, A MATCHLESSLY POWERFUL SOURCE OF COHERENT LIGHT, PROVIDES THE COHERENT LIGHT SOURCE NEEDED TO SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION OF HOLOGRAPHY. THE OUTLINES ARE EVIDENT OF INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS IN NON- DESTRUCTIVE TESTING, THREE-DIMENSIONAL PORTRAITS, HOLOGRAPHIC MICROSCOPY, THREE-D CINEMA PROJECTION, NEW COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION STORAGE TECHNIQUES, AND THE EXTENSION OF THE HOLOGRAPHIC PRINCIPLE TO OTHER WAVE PHENOMENA, IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE VISION BY ULTRASONIC AND ELECTRO-MAGNETIC WAVES. HOLOGRAPHY HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO PRODUCE ONE-ARMED INTERFEROMETERS, IN WHICH THE WAVES THAT ARE BROUGHT INTO INTERFERENCE PASS THROUGH THE SAME OPTICAL TRACK, BUT NOT SIMULTANEOUSLY. THREE TYPES OF HOLOGRAPHIC INTERFEROMETRY ARE DISTINGUISHED AND DISCUSSED. ANOTHER APPLICATION THAT SHOWS CONSIDERABLE PROMISE IS THE USE OF HOLOGRAMS AS GENERALIZED OPTICAL ELEMENTS.
