INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS FOR NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT

New York City Transit is experiencing unprecedented ridership growth as well as customer satisfaction and convenience. Daily Metro and bus ridership is now well above 7 Million. The proposed presentation is to explain some of the key, innovative technical, and customer service programs in place that have contributed to this phenomenon. Selected improvementûtopics that will be presented are: The deployment of ITS programs throughout the New York Metropolitan Region, focusing on improvement to the New York public transit (Metro/Subway, rail and bus) system . The development of the New York Metropolitan Region ITS architecture o The ongoing system-wide implementation of electronic real time passenger information screens, "help point" intercom kiosks and close circuit television security systems (26 Metro lines, 458 stations, 300 bus routes) . The implementation of regional "pre-trip" web-based transit planning solutions: real time traffic and transit incident and construction information o personalized traveler information on customized transit trip planning . Advances in electronic fare collection via deployment of smart card technology . Implementation of advanced service control techniques such as the "step aside, speed your ride" program at overly-congested station platforms . Inauguration of automated rail service to JFK airport o Station rehabilitation with advanced technologies and "arts for transit" program .
