EVALUATION OF MOTOR CARRIER REAR VISION SYSTEMS

As part of the federal transportation authorization known as SAFETEA-LU, the United States Congress has identified a high-priority need for research to reduce fatalities, injuries, andûproperty damages caused by backing crashes involving motor carriers. This research attempts to evaluate the effectiveness of rear vision systems, assess the reliability of existing methods for transmitting video signals, examine the ease of installation and ease of use of the products, and estimate potential savings. The preliminary results from the on-going research provided a foundation for comprehensive evaluations of motor carrier vision systems to reduce backing crashes and increase operational efficiency.
