SEALING JOINTS IN CONCRETE ROADS: A FULL-SCALE EXPERIMENT ON TRUNK ROAD A.46 AT WIDMERPOOL, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE, 1965

AS PART OF A PROGRAM TO STUDY THE PERFORMANCE OF JOINT-SEALING COMPOUNDS, TWO FULL-SCALE EXPERIMENTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT TO EXAMINE SIMULTANEOUSLY THE DESIGN OF THE SEALING GROOVE AND THE PERFORMANCE OF VARIOUS JOINT-SEALING COMPOUNDS ON LENGTHS OF ROAD WITH DIFFERENT JOINT LAYOUTS. THE FIRST OF THESE EXPERIMENTS CARRIED OUT TO EXAMINE THE PROBLEMS ON LENGTHS OF CARRIAGEWAYS WITH TWO CONTRACTION JOINTS BETWEEN EXPANSION JOINTS. THE JOINT SPACING RANGED FROM 28 FT (8.5M) TO 80 FT (25M) TO GIVE VARYING AMOUNTS OF EXTENSION OF THE JOINTING MATERIAL; THE INITIAL JOINT WIDTH RANGED FROM 1/2 - 1 1/4 IN (13-32MM) AND THE WIDTH/DEPTH RATIOS RANGED FROM 1/2-2. TWO HOT-POURED BITUMINOUS COMPOUNDS AND TWO COLD-POURED PITCH-MODIFIED POLYSULPHIDE COMPOUNDS WERE USED. PERIODIC MEASUREMENTS OF JOINT MOVEMENTS AND SURVEYS OF SEALANT FAILURE WERE MADE FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS. THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT, WITH THE TYPES OF SEALANTS AND JOINT SPACING USED HERE, TO MAINTAIN THE MOST EFFECTIVE SEAL AND JOINT SHOULD BE AT LEAST 3/4 IN (19MM) DEEP AND WITH THE MAXIMUM MOVEMENT FOR BOTH EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION JOINTS LIMITED TO NOT MORE THAN ABOUT 33 PER CENT, PREFERABLY 20 PER CENT. IN ADDITION THE SURFACE LEVEL OF THE SEAL AS POURED SHOULD BE NOT LESS THAN 1/4 IN (6MM) BELOW THE CARRIAGEWAY SURFACE. THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY ALSO INDICATED THAT EFFICIENT SEALING IS HAMPERED BY INADEQUATE METHODS OF PREPARING AND SEALING JOINTS AND BY CONSTRUCTIONAL TRAFFIC OPERATING IN THE SAME AREA WHERE SEALING IS BEING ATTEMPTED.
